Conservator/Collections Mgr:
Sheila Hanke
is responsible for overseeing the stabilization and documentation of individual flags. She oversees policies, procedures and registration relating to the flag collection. Sheila also manages the conservation laboratory and supervises technical staff.

Curators of History:
Sheila Hanke
and Laura Lee Ramirez are responsible for historical research of both flags and unit histories. They oversee the development of interpretive exhibitions and related publications.

Assistant Conservator:
Laura Lee Ramirez
is responsible for carrying out specific stabilization treatments and documentation of individual flags under supervision of the Project Conservator. She is also the co-coordinator of volunteers
related to battle flag exhibitions.

Photographer/Graphic Designer:
Kelly Bailey
joined the project in 2001 as a research volunteer and now serves as a part-time staff member. He does all the photo documentation and graphic design for the project. This includes development of the website and the merchandise materials.

Project Assistants:
Have completed course work and 200 hours of hands-on training.

Richard Fast is a retired science teacher with an interest in the Civil War. As a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a reenactor, he is encouraged that the State of Iowa is protecting its Civil War flags.

David Holmgren has a master's degree in history from Iowa State University. Dave has thirteen years of experience teaching in public schools. He has worked as a volunteer at Living History Farms in Des Moines and on the staff of the State Historical Society of Iowa. David does research and writes copy for the project.

Volunteers:
Ben Ramirez
is on active duty with the Air Force assigned to the Air National Guard, Des Moines. He assists the project with its IT needs, and helps coordinate the volunteers associated with project exhibitions. He also serves as the liaison with the Air Force—Des Moines base and the Air National Guard—Des Moines.

Norma Rutz is a talented seamstress who assists the project by sewing storage covers.

 

 

The battle flag staff is available for speaking engagements and special presentations. They are passionate about the project and have many interesting stories and important facts to share about the units, the flags and the stabilization process.
