Conservator/Collections Mgr:
Sheila Hanke
is responsible for overseeing the stabilization and documentation of individual flags. She oversees policies, procedures and registration relating to the flag collection. Sheila also manages the conservation laboratory and supervises technical staff. She oversees the development of interpretive exhibitions and related publications.

Historian:
Due to recent budget cuts this position will now be filled by Sheila Hanke.

Conservation Assistant:
Sarah Carlson provides assistance with the stabilization of flags. She is responsible for maintaining the image database, assisting with educational outreach and performing yearly inventory.

Photographer/Graphic Designer:
Kelly Bailey
joined the project in 2001 as a research volunteer and now serves as a part-time staff member. He does all the photo documentation and graphic design for the project. This includes development of the website and the merchandise materials.

Richard Fast is a retired science teacher with an interest in the Civil War. As a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a reenactor, he is encouraged that the State of Iowa is protecting its Civil War flags.

 

 

Volunteers:
David M. Lamb David joined the Volunteer team at the Iowa Historical Museum in early February of 2010.  He is the First Sergeant of Company “A” of the Forty-Ninth Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment the Civil War era uniformed Honor Guard for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the same unit that has been assisting SHSI with rotating the Iowa Battle Flags since the Fall of 2009.

David is a retired Enforcement Agent for the Iowa Board of Nursing; and, has pursued his passion for archaeology for the past thirty-five years with field work in this country, Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and China.  His laboratory experience includes a three-year stint as a Forensics Investigator (today’s “CSI”) for the Polk County Sheriff’s Department; experience in Lithics and Ceramics laboratories as an undergraduate and graduate student; as well as working in a photography lab.  He holds undergraduate degrees (AS and AA) in Criminalistics, Linguistics, and Anthropology (BS); and, and a graduate degree (M.A.) in Anthropology/History.

David is a Vietnam Veteran and lives in the historic Hallet Flats, in the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden in Des Moines’ Western Gateway Park.

David L. Thompson David joined the Volunteer staff at the Iowa Historical Museum in early January of 2010. He is a Color Sergeant of Company “A” of the Forty-Ninth Iowa Volunteer Infantry  Regiment of the Civil War era uniformed Honor Guard for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. “The Governor’s Own Iowa Rifles” he Iowa Battle Flags since the fall of 2009.  He is also a member of the 3rd Iowa Independent  Light Artillery, (Dubuque, Iowa Battery) Civil War re-enactor. He is currently the Club Treasurer, for the Army of the Southwest, Inc. Which is also
A  Civil War Reenacting Group.

David is a Retired Des Moines, Iowa Professional Firefighter and retired
veteran of the United States Air Force Reserve. David has always had a passion for History, and now that he is retired, he has had an opportunity to explorer Civil War re-enacting. Because of this he requested to volunteer to help save the Battle Flags at the Iowa State Historical Building.

David is married to Jane E. Thompson, they live in Ankeny, Iowa.  They have four children.

Micah Meyer is a knowledgeable volunteer whose passion for history enables him to be an informative as well as entertaining project guide. Micah helps to conduct public tours of the conservation lab.

Karen Barker works in law enforcement and has a passion for sewing and anything computer related. She assists the project with its IT needs and label research.

Hollie Reily offers her experice as an educator to the Project. Hollie is an art teacher for the Massena/Lewis/Griswald school district. She reviews educational lesson plans and develops preliminary sketches of exhibition ideas.

Norma Rutz is a talented seamstress who assists the project by sewing storage covers.
