Stabilization schedule

  
 

The Iowa Battle Flag Preservation project is undertaken to protect Iowa's battle flags, which are unique cultural property, through appropriate measures including conservation and stabilization.

STABILIZATION
The first concern of treatment is stabilization. Stabilization will prolong the flags' existence and maintain the information content while minimizing or reducing the rate of deterioration.

Before and after photos of this 7th Iowa Cavalry flag show the dramatic improvements after treatment.

 

  

CONSERVATION
Conservation procedures involve treatment that includes the deliberate alternation of chemical or physical aspects of the flags
intended to prolong their existence.

The photo below shows staff adding stabiltex over the flag surface. The colored stabiltex is used to give a representation of the flag in its original state. Finally, the flag is framed for storage and display like the 19th Infantry pictured below.
