Staff pole of the 26th Louisiana Infantry. Walnut. Original. Medium brown, semi-gloss finish with red undertones. Finial is missing. Major damage to staff from 55 caliber bullets which went through staff shattering wood at various locations (seven) along pole. End cap is of a light-weight metal, plain design, open seam in back, and flat top. Possible field soldered. The end cap was used as the finial after the staff was severely damaged and whittled down to receive it. Compression fitted. Finial is missing. The pole has lost approximately 3 feet in length to battle damage.

W. M. G. Torrence, Co. 30th Iowa Vol. States the flag was captured from the 26th Louisiana at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. J. M. Hiatt stated that "A rebel soldier of that Regiment (26th Louisiana) was in my office the other day. He said four men were killed holding this flag, at Champion Hills."
