This was the banner of Company B, 1st Iowa Cavalry, known as the Hawkeye Rangers. This unusual design, with the word “Hawk” and representation of an eye followed by the word “Rangers," dominates the obverse side of this flag. Although horizontal splitting is evident, the original inscription on the reverse side is known to have read, “We will meet you on the Border.”

The hand-painted flag was presented to the unit by the ladies of Lyons (Clinton), Iowa in 1861.

This flag was adopted by the Iowa and International Questers Clubs in 2004, and received final conservation treatments in 2006. More information about this is available for download.

The flag was recently displayed as part of the Civil War Survivors Exhibit in 2006.
