We prefer two weeks advance notice, and each out-of-the-building presentation runs approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. For presentation descriptions see below. We can also tailor a program to meet your needs.

Battle Flag Project:
This informational presentation defines and discusses the different attempts to save Iowa’s battle flags over the past 112 plus years. Exploring the conservation efforts of 1894, 1904 and 1977.

The presentation also discusses the 24th General Assembly’s passing of two laws in 1892 that made an enduring impact on the preservation of the state’s battle flags.

The final focus centers on the public concerns about the condition of the flags and the response of the 78th General Assembly.

Iowa in the Civil War:
This presentation focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of Iowa’s role in the Civil War and the stories of the individuals associated with Iowa’s battle flags. It’s important to realize the role Iowan’s played during this pivotal moment in our nation’s history. The Civil War tore not only the nation apart but also the lives of its citizens. The emotional impact the Civil War made on the citizens and their descendants still persists. The flags the men fought under are the focal point for much of this emotion.

Stabilization:
One aim of this presentation is to educate the public to a higher awareness and understanding of the role of preventative treatments in the stabilization of the flags. Exhibition in the Capitol cases was actively deteriorating the flags.

Another aim is to inform the public how the Battle Flag conservation and collections staff is conducting long-term preservation, and the utilization of the collection for the benefit of the public and scholars.
